IAS 2013 Media Training Session for Media Delegates

Posted 17 juin 2013, 10:51 , by Conference Secretariat

As was the case with previous editions of the IAS Conference, organizers will be holding a media training session prior to the IAS 2013 conference on Sunday 30 June, 10.00-12.00. Media training sessions form an important part of the pre-conference programme: the free event, open to all media delegates, is tailored to help participants get the most out of the conference, learn about the latest developments in HIV and hear from a range of speakers covering topics related to the conference.

Media has a sizeable influence on the general public and can help raise awareness of the HIV epidemic and address stigma and discrimination. Media are also vital in ensuring that the HIV epidemic does not get pushed off the global agenda and stays at the forefront of people’s minds so that it gets the attention it deserves.  IAS 2013 organizers would like all journalists to leave the conference and continue to report accurately on HIV so that not only the participants at the conference, but also the media’s global audience benefits.

HIV is a complex subject matter and knowledge of the epidemic is not always at the highest level both in the media and in the general population. Aim of the media training is to help all participants to better understand and cover a subject which has numerous scientific, social and cultural implications. Since for many journalists this could be their first big scientific conference, the media training will include talks on how to get the best out of the conference. In addition to this, we hope to enhance the knowledge of the situation of HIV in Malaysia. The distribution of people affected changes in each country, as does the response taken, Malaysia is no different and has faced its own challenges and successes in ending the epidemic.

Media training provided at previous conferences enormously helped journalists in reporting accurately on the conference and HIV and AIDS. We strongly encourage all media delegates to attend this session as it will greatly enhance their experience at IAS 2013.

The media training will take place on Sunday 30 June from 10am to 12pm in the media centre on the 3rd floor of the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. Registration for registered media delegates opens on 3 June. Please send an email to joanne.lacy@iasociety.org to register. Media have to be registered for the conference to attend the training.
