By Mirjam J. Curno, PhD, ELS, Managing Editor of the Journal of the International AIDS Society
The Journal of the International AIDS Society (JIAS) is pleased to once again offer a capacity-building workshop in scientific writing at the 7th IAS Conference on HIV Pathogenesis, Treatment and Prevention (IAS 2013). The workshop, entitled Publish or Perish: how to write a research manuscript, will take place on Wednesday 3 July at 14:30-17:30 in Mini Room 3, and is aimed at less-experienced authors.
Editors-in-Chief, Mark Wainberg and Papa Salif Sow, as well as Executive Editor Shirin Heidari and Managing Editor Mirjam Curno, will present practical guidelines on writing, submitting and revising manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The session will start with an overview of how to draft each section of a manuscript, step-by-step from the introduction to the conclusions. Further guidelines will cover how to choose a journal, navigating the editorial process and in particular how to respond to peer reviewers. The workshop will also cover basics in publication ethics and discuss common reasons for rejection of manuscripts. The editors will use illustrative examples and short exercises to support participants in the learning process. Time will also be dedicated to open questions from the audience to the editors.
The aim of the workshop is to support researchers in disseminating their findings through the scientific literature and transmit useful information to aspiring authors in order to increase their chances of getting their manuscripts accepted.
